Felt Books

brand identity for a small online Bookshop

FeltBooksBanner.jpg

Felt Books is a new shop selling vintage books with exceptionally rad covers, and is the side project of Annie Szafranski who runs Feels Design Studio, LLC. Felt Books is operated as a separate entity, and exists as a more tactile experience that helps feed into the love of typography, illustration, design, and of course, reading.

The slowly growing shop focuses on mass market paperback classics that are mostly fiction, however it also carries a few notable non-fiction and poetry books. With the interest in getting as many books in the hands of individuals for cheap while still putting such high value on the cover art—the rich history of the mass market paperback and it’s perfect travel size make these humble books so desirable. And since one can’t be provided with so much quality typographic content without wondering what typeface was used, the cover type has already been identified.

The logo for Felt Books was inspired by the pattern the text makes when a page is dog eared. The type was selected for it’s bold characteristics such as those found in the "f" and the "t", while still being modern and of the time to give the books new life, opposed to a complete throwback and nostalgia overload. One of the more exciting things is identifying all of the type used for the covers—which are consistently bold and full of character, and it was important to keep that in mind when making the selection.
